  • Self-regulation skills and weight loss maintenance

Many successful dieters fail to maintain their initial weight loss. This study examined the effectiveness of a self regulation program that was delivered either face to face or over the internet.

All groups regained weight. The group that received the face to face training regained about half of the weight the other groups regained. The group that received the training over the internet achieved slightly better results than the control group.

  • Chitosan and weight loss

Chitosan is an indigestible, structural component of crab and shrimp shells. Similar to dietary fiber, it has the ability to decrease the amount of fat absorbed by the digestive system.

In this study, the group that received chitosan lost more weight and more fat than either the control group or the placebo group.

  • Physical activity and body composition

Subjects where divided into active and sedentary groups and monitored for changes in weight, fat mass and fat-free mass. The active individuals were less likely to gain body fat with weight gain and more likely to lose fat with weight loss than were sedentary individuals.

Small weight changes (either gains or losses) came from body fat, while larger changes also affected fat free mass.

  • Moderate carbohydrate diet lowers cardiovascular disease risk

Test subjects either received a high carbohydrate, low fat diet or a moderate carbohydrate, high fat diet. The moderate carbohydrate group achieved a 20% greater weight loss and insulin sensitivity improved relative to weight lost in both groups. The moderate carbohydrate group achieved lower triglycerides and higher HDL cholesterol…both risk factors for heart disease.

It should be noted that this study did not use a low carbohydrate diet, the moderate carbohydrate group received 40% of their calories as carbohydrate.
