Meet Lord Alistair McAlpine: What He Did For Broome

If you’ve walked along the unspoiled beaches of Cable Beach—and visited the fabulous resort there—or held a lustrous South Sea pearl in your hand, then you have experienced a small aspect of the wonderful effects that Lord Alistair McAlpine has had on the city of Broome and its environs.

This peer of the realm first went to Australia and fell in love with it in 1959. Having lived in various parts of the world, including his beloved Britain as well as a favourite estate in Italy, he returned to Australia in recent years. The great wide and wild ranges of the Kimberley are in his heart, and he has made a permanent mark on that area in particular.

    Enter Lord McAlpine

Lord McAlpine first came into the world during the bombing of 1942’s wartime London, born by Caesarian. The doctor asked his father to choose between saving the mother or saving the baby.

The father rightfully—as even McAlpine himself asserts—chose the mother, but luckily the child lived as well.

His first exposure to Australia was in the southeast corner, in and around Perth. Quite a young man when he arrived there, already schooled in property development as learned from his grandfather Robert “Concrete Bob” McAlpine, he made his own fortune by speculating on and developing properties.

His pet project was a hotel, which he built up and developed, and he also stimulated growth in a series of office buildings over an area of several blocks.

He left Perth, however, and returned to England, where yet another chapter of his life would unfold.

In 1975 he met soon-to-be Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and he staunchly supported her throughout her three terms. He was a major force in fundraising for the Conservative Party, and she returned his favour by appointing him as the Party’s treasurer. When Thatcher lost the support of the people and resigned in 1991, he likewise gave up his post. In 2010 he gave up his seat in the House of Lords.

But before that happened, back to Australia he went, in the mid-1980s.

Finally his travels took him all the way up to the Kimberley region, fascinated by the seashells there, and he absolutely fell in love with Broome. He was amazed by the wondrous beauty of this peaceful place, and captivated by the colourful flora and remarkable fauna.

    The Stunning Roebuck Bay

Nothing could compare to the stunning bay at Roebuck Point except possibly the pristine white sands at Cable Beach. He was fascinated by the dramatic and eclectic history of the place combined with the baroque ornamentations found on some of the local structures juxtaposed with the clean calm lines of homes and businesses built to withstand near-desert conditions.

There could be no better future for Broome, he theorised, than a healthy tourist economy to take the place of the dwindling pearling industry.

Broome had at least four times borne the brunt of attack by the Japanese during World War II. Streets and the infrastructure in general were crumbling.

It was then that Lord Alistair McAlpine realised the best thing he could do for Broome would be to invest in it, to revitalise it, to ensure that it held its place amongst other great visitor attractions moving forward in the new century.

In the end he spent over a half billion dollars on property investment and reconstruction. He restored a movie theatre. His promotion of the gleaming silver pearls found in the area reinvigorated the industry. One of McAlpine’s pet projects involved a zoo housing camels, kangaroos, and wallabies in the Pearl Coast Zoological Gardens in 1984.

It only took half a decade to expand the place to include colourful parrots, cockatoos, and macaws, as well as a variety of exotic African animals such as oryx and zebra.

With the Broome pilots’ strike in 1989, much of what McAlpine had built up was left to disintegrate. The strike decimated Broome’s tourism industry and other businesses. The zoo closed, and many of the businesses that he had promoted went under with the hits to tourism instigated by the strike.

McAlpine sold many of his assets in the area and returned to England.

Eventually he moved to Italy. In recent years he was suggested by a journalist to be a paedophile, and the heart of the man again became evident when he was cleared of charges and his only suggested punishment against the newsman was to mandate the man’s work on behalf of three charities.

In 2012, Broome called once again upon Lord Alistair McAlpine, this time to honour him.

He was bestowed the honour of Freeman of the Municipality.

He still spoke about the importance of protecting the natural beauty of the area from ugly industrial construction – such as what is happening at James Price point, a goal we can all embrace.

On January 17th 2014 – Lord Mac passed away in Italy. He will be remembered in Western Australia as bringing tourism to Broome and adding to the charm of “Broome Town”

  • The Amazing Dog Training Man Review

The Amazing Dog Training Man Review

The Amazing Dog Training Man actually has several products. This review is on the Ultimate Online Dog Training Course. I hope to cover the other products in the future.

Instead of a simple ebook, the Ultimate Online Dog Training Course is designed as a six week course, although you probably won’t need that long unless you have a real stubborn pet. Either way, you and your pet learn at your own pace.

Dog sitting on grass with collar

The good thing about this course is that it takes you by the hand and leads you step by step, one lesson leading to the next. There are videos along the way that help show you exactly what he is talking about.

The Ultimate Online Dog Training Course isn’t as thorough as some of the other dog training products, but at the same time, it costs considerably less than the others.

There is little mentioned about problem behaviour, such as biting, digging, whining, etc. I believe the theory is that if you train your puppy the right way from the beginning, these problem behaviours take care of themselves. That makes sense. If your older dog has no serious behaviour problems, these lessons work for them as well

What you will learn is the basic commands that every dog and owner should know, such as sit, down, and stand. You’ll be able to teach the stay and recall commands. You’ll discover how to use hand signals and the secrets of loose leash training.

In essence, when you complete the Ultimate Online Dog Training Course and use the lessons it teaches, you will have a well trained, obedient pet that you can show off to your friends and family.

What I didn’t like: Much like another product I reviewed, support after purchase is NIL. The videos are downloadable, but if you want to save the lessons on your hard drive, you will need to copy and paste the text into a separate document. This is simple to do, but in my opinion, an unnecessary added step. Easy, but annoying.

Personally I’d go for a more well supported and easy to follow product such as Secrets to Dog Training.

  • Stop Puppy Biting – Training Puppies Not To Bite

Stop Puppy Biting – Training Puppies Not To Bite

You have to start training puppies a puppy not to bite as early as 6- 7 weeks old. This ensures that he will not develop bad habits that will only get worse later. You should stop puppy biting now before it become a bigger problem.

Everyone knows how cute a little puppy chewing can be, but you should never let a puppy bite on your hands or feet. Biting puppies can grow up to be biting dogs, and no one wants that.

You need to learn how to get a puppy to stop biting as early as possible. There are many techniques that can teach you how to stop your puppy from biting. One method is the “time out” method. When your puppy bites you say “ouch”, then leave the room for a while, closing the door behind you when possible.

    Dog Yawning

After 30 seconds or so return to the room, if your puppy bites you again repeat this method. If you see a reduction in puppy biting, them this method may be for you. Even as his bite becomes softer, continue to express the fact that no biting feels good, and that this is not acceptable behavior.

When you reach to pet your dog with one hand, offer him a chew toy with the other. This will give him something to bite on other than your hand while he learns that petting is great. When he begins to lick and not use his teeth, praise him and offer him a treat. This teaches him that affection is good as long as it does not turn to biting.

Once the puppy biting problem is no longer as serious and he’s responding to training, teach him the “off” command. Hold a dog treat in a closed hand and issue the command. If your dog doesn’t touch your hand for a short period of time, say “take it”, and reward him with the treat. This will train him that “off” means not to touch. Once he learns this, you can use this command whenever you see a puppy bite coming.

In bad biting cases, as soon as your puppy latches onto your hand say No! Quickly put your thumb inside his mouth under his tongue, and your other finger under his chin. Hold it there for about 10 seconds (not too tightly). This will feel uncomfortable to your puppy, plus he won’t be able to bite you.

Again if your puppy has a severe biting problem you can try this training technique. Put on a pair of gloves and apply a foul tasting substance to them. Your dog will soon learn that if he bites you, it won’t taste good. This method produces a strong negative association to your dog every time he decides to bite you. Some dogs are smart enough to realize that when you take your foul tasting gloves off, it is fine to sink their fangs into you again!

For older puppies (around 6 months) this is a great way to stop puppy biting. Put a pinch or choke collar on your puppy and each time he bites you give the lead a short sharp tug. This correction will be an unpleasant association to your dog every time he bites you. It won’t take him long to stop.

These are just a few ideas on how to keep a puppy from biting, but they are extremely effective for most people. Stopping puppy biting will take a lot of patience and work, but it will be well worth it once you have an affectionate dog that knows not to use his teeth on skin.

  • Secrets to Dog Training Review

Because your dog will finally start obeying your commands with the simple, but effective techniques in Secrets to Dog Training.

Secrets to Dog Training has quickly become one of the best selling dog training manuals on the Internet. And with good reason.

Nearly everything you could ever need to know is there. And if it isn’t, then it’s probably in one of the many bonuses that come with it.

At over 180 pages, it may seem daunting, but everything is presented in such a way that makes it easy to read and understand. But that doesn’t mean it lacks substance. Daniel’s style is straight ahead and right to the point, without all the fluff.

You’ll find that training your dog to be obedient isn’t all that difficult if you have the desire and patience.

Another thing I liked about Secrets to Dog Training is that one of the bonuses that come with the ebook is the Secrets to Dog Training audio. Some of us are readers, while some of us are listeners. Whichever one you are, now you can go either way. I like to read the book while I listen to the audio at the same time. It just seems to sink in better.

As far as the other bonuses are concerned, I have to be honest. It seems that every time I look at the sales page, the bonuses are different, so you will have to check to find the flavor of the week.

But from my experience, if Daniel changes something, it is for the better. I especially like the free email consultation you get as a bonus. No book, audio, or video can possible anticipate every problem you may have and this is the perfect solution. There is even a members forum, where dog owners like yourself can exchange ideas and stories.

At $37.00 (at the time of this review), the price is in line, if not lower, than other comparable dog training books, so that makes it a good value.

If dog training videos are more your style, when you place your order, you have a chance to upgrade to the Premium Package, which gives you these extra goodies.

“Dog Training Series” Download Video Files
“Secrets To Dog Training” Downloadable Video Files
“Secrets to Dog Training Pro” Software

If you are like me, you can’t much lazier than that. About the only thing it doesn’t do is come to your house and train your dog for you.

Is it worth the extra $59.95? That’s up to you. Like I said, I’m lazy, so these videos were perfect for me. And the “Secrets to Dog Training Pro” Software was like a bonus within a bonus.

Bottom line, if you own a dog and are tired of him or her ruling the house, you can’t go wrong with Secrets to Dog Training, weather you get the premium package or not.
